When it's snowy and cold outside what do you do? Sit by the fire and read a book? Clean your house for the 12th time this week? Not today!! Today you strap on your snowshoes and go trekking up the Wellsville Mountains just outside of Logan. This is one of the steepest mountain ranges in North America and we have it in our backyard!
We headed up to Logan early this morning, around 7 am, and went straight to Katy's parent's house in Mendon, UT - just west of Logan. Her dad Brian is an Adventuring Legend, and has his own Adventuring storehouse of awesomeness! He literally has everything you could ever need for any type of Adventure, and he was our awesome host for this trek. We geared up, loaded up, and headed to the Deep Canyon trail head. It was cold to start out and we bundled up to the max, but as we started walking and working up a sweat we started peeling layers... and more layers... It was beautiful and serene. The snow wasn't super deep, but it was crisp and almost crystal-ized. We saw not a single soul today - it was just us and the mountains, mano y mano. As we continued up the mountain we got up above the inversion and were rewarded with gorgeous views of the valley and fresh, clean - warm! -air :)

Our goal was to hit the top of the ridge where you can see over into Brigham City, but we ran out of time before we made it to the top (dang it!!) That was super painful for us, Katy was dying a little inside, but it was still a beautiful, fun Adventurous day even without the grand climax at the top.

Snowshoeing looks pretty easy right? It's hard work, but super rewarding. I'm a first-timer and can tell you I was FEELING IT that night... My legs ached like I had serious growing-pains - I may have mentioned it once or twice (or a thousand times) to Katy on our drive home. Luckily we have an awesome friend with a hot-tub that let us jump in and soak our (my) tired legs...ahhhh...

We had a great day exploring the beauty of the Wellsville's by snowshoe, and are already contemplating another trip when we can make it to the top for that epic ending!
HOW TO DO THIS YOURSELF:
1) Renting Gear: Here are a couple of places in the Logan area where you can rent the gear you need for this Adventure:
** http://www.thesportsmanltd.com/logan-utah-ski-bike-rentals-repairs.htm ($12/day - can pick them up the night before as part of a 1-day rental)
** https://www.usu.edu/campusrec/outdoor_programs/op_rentals ($15/day with poles, $13/day just snowshoes - can pick them up anytime the day before as part of a 1-day rental)
2) Bring water, snacks, and your camera for the beautiful shots! There are avalanches in the area so be sure to check the forecast and somewhere like the Utah Avalanche Center (linked) before you go
3) Timing: Our roundtrip snowshoe trek took us about 5 hours. If you're trying to reach the summit I'd say to add on about an hour more. We arrived to the trailhead around 10:30 in the morning and got down by 3:30 that afternoon. Plan your timing accordingly based on the location you'll be coming from.
