Blue skies, warm sun, good friends, and awesome climbing = an amazing Adventure at South Black Rock in Southern Utah!

There's something so amazing about rock climbing - the feeling of pure adrenaline as you literally claw your way to the top of a sheer mountain cliff, the exhilaration of surveying the scene from the top, the thrill of rappelling back down to solid ground, and the exhaustion in your muscles from such a physically demanding feat. In one word - it's AWESOME!

South Black Rock mountain is in Southern Utah near Snow Canyon just north of St George. Click here for directions to the parking lot and how to access the climbing routes. Erin Grover, Laura Albrecht, and Lori Hansen were our fearless guides and Julena Bonner came as well for some great climbing!

This is a great place to climb for multiple reasons -

1) it's very accessible, easy to find and get to

2) You don't have to pay to get into the area

3) There's a wide variety of routes on both sides of this canyon. It's divided into the "Sunnyside" facing the southeast and the "Shadyside" facing the northwest. We opted for the Sunnyside because we were worried about being cold in the shade at this time of year, but we were shedding layers like snakes - it was warm!

4) The routes vary in difficulty, some easier - some harder, and are all right in a row down the black rock canyon walls. We hit 3 routes today, and could have done as many more as we had time for. It's perfect in that you can do as many or as few as you have time for and they're all lined up within easy reach of each other. Plus if there are other climbers there (which there will be) you can just move down a few feet and do a different route.

Erin brought her STINKIN' AWESOME chairs (something like these on Amazon) and we had a blast cheering each other on and watching each other lizard-climb up the rock cliffs. "Gravitational Attraction" was tough - that one required a little 'help' from our belay-er when we lost footing a time or two (aka fell...)

We don't have real climbing shoes, we just go for it in our tennis shoes and hiking boots, so don't let that stop you! This is a fantastic spot for a great day of climbing - get out there and give it a try!

HOW TO DO THIS YOURSELF:

1) Renting Gear: Here are a couple of places in Cedar City where you can rent climbing gear for this Adventure:

2) Find a climbing buddy who's been before and can keep you safe while you're learning (we love you Erin, Laura, & Lori!!)

3) Timing: We started climbing around 11 am and left about 2 pm, you can spend as much or as little time as you have here! This is one of the things we loved the most about it :)
